Let’s build a digital presence that captures the ambition of your Pacific Northwest brand.

( THE ETHOS BEHIND PORTLAND WEB DESIGN WORK )
Portland is scrappy in the best way...

Packed with independent restaurants and businesses, start-ups, working artists, community organizations and nonprofits — they're all doing work that deserves to be seen. But showing the work is part of doing the work.
A restaurant without its menu online, an artist whose only presence is an unanswered DM, a dentist whose site doesn't list the insurance plans they accept — these are the gaps between what an organization offers and who can actually access it.
I build websites that close those gaps. That means answering every question a visitor might have before they have to ask. It means building sites that the people running them can actually manage — or pairing them with a maintenance plan so nothing falls through the cracks. And it means treating a website as a system, not a standalone project — something that integrates with your strategy, your tools, and your goals.
SEO, accessibility, responsiveness, real functionality. Beautiful, yes. But useful first.
Portland's creative and community ecosystem is too good to be buried behind a site that doesn't work. Let's fix that.
YOU'RE BUILDING SOMETHING MEANINGFUL IN PORTLAND — YOUR WEBSITE & BRAND SHOULD REFLECT THAT
You're doing it all: growing your organization, serving clients and your community, developing programs, and building partnerships across the Rose City and beyond. But your website? It's usually the last thing to catch up.
Does this sound familiar? Your digital tools take too much time for too little return. Your messaging feels inconsistent — strong in some places, unclear in others. Some info is outdated, and you have new offerings or programs you haven’t even listed. Every launch or campaign feels like you're starting from scratch. You know your website could be doing more for inbound leads or community education.
But you just don’t know what step to take next. Familiar? You’re not alone, but here's what's at stake: when your web design lags behind your organization's or business's growth, the people you serve hesitate. Potential donors or customers second-guess. Partners move slower. Your website should amplify your impact, not hold it back. You deserve a website and brand that reflects the strength of what you've built and positions you for your next stage of growth — whether you're running a startup, small business, nonprofit, or creative practice here in Portland, Oregon. Keep on reading to see how I can support your PNW business.

( about )
Hi, I'm Lauren Lester.
Your "I can figure that out"
person.
Skip the Portland web design agency with layers of staff and bloated retainers. I'm a seasoned independent consultant who works directly with clients on the systems that move their businesses, organizations, and creative work forward. Former food media founder, I built and scaled digital platforms to millions of readers, sold multiple businesses to investors, and now design systems that help others skip the burnout of patchwork tools.
Currently serving on the
AMA PDX Board as Director of Agency, connecting nonprofits with pro bono marketing and creative teams, I also prioritize community impact work. I work with clients 1:1 for all projects. You'll work directly with me — no middlemen, no interns writing your story, no outsourcing to a random freelancer. Just senior talent who's been in your shoes and knows how to make your brand or mission catch up to your ambition.

THE WORK
-
BRAND STRATEGY & DESIGNItem Link List Item 1
Reframed Audra's entire offer under the term "spatial therapy," tying together her background in feng shui, interior psychology, and supportive environments. Developed a complete brand system including a custom illustrated logo suite, color palette, typography, and brand guidelines for consistent implementation across every touchpoint.
-
COMMUNICATIONSItem Link List Item 2
Built messaging frameworks, service structure, and brand bios that finally gave Audra the language to describe what she does. Wrote all website copy page by page, working collaboratively to capture her voice and clarify her offer.
-
WEB DESIGN & SEOItem Link List Item 3
Designed and built a modern Squarespace website optimized for SEO and accessibility. Clean, functional, and easy to manage without any ongoing developer support.
Cultivated Space founder, Audra had a clear vision for her Portland, Oregon interior design practice but her brand wasn't carrying that clarity forward. The offer felt abstract, the messaging was hard to pin down, and the visual identity didn't match her "artsy, modern" aesthetic. We reframed her entire offer into spatial therapy tying in her background in feng shui and phsyscology, returned to her original name (Cultivated Space), and built a complete brand system from the ground up.
the result: a brand that feels grounded, a website that's easy to manage, and the freedom to grow without extra noise.
( CLIENT CASE STUDY )
REFRAMING VISION INTO STRUCTURE
“Lauren was absolutely invaluable in my branding and website redesign. Not only did she deliver a beautiful logo and website that feel deeply aligned, but she was able to bring a sense of clarity to the way I present my business to potential clients that wasn't there before. The copy she delivered really captures the essence of my work and has armed me to better promote my offerings. As a creative, I feel very clear on what I like ... but am not always as clear in explaining that vision to other people! She really absorbed my inspiration and feedback and was able to translate it into something tactile, functional, and visually stunning. Beyond that, Lauren is always punctual & thorough in communication throughout the process. My experience working with her was a 10/10.”

FAQs
What makes your approach different from a Portland web design agency?
Unlike traditional Portland web design agencies with account managers and tiered teams, I work directly with business owners, nonprofit leaders, and creatives. You get senior-level web design expertise without the agency overhead, combining strategic thinking with hands-on execution. Think of it as the quality of a top web design company in Portland with the agility and personal attention of an independent professional.
How long does a web design project take?
Most websites take 6-12 weeks depending on scope. We'll establish a clear timeline during our discovery call based on your specific needs — whether you're a business, nonprofit, or creative practice.
What platform do you recommend?
For small to mid-size teams, Squarespace or WordPress is reliable, secure, and easy to maintain without a developer. It supports e-commerce, events, blogs, landing pages, basic CRM integrations. If you need complex custom apps or content workflows we can discuss the best platform for your needs.
Can you migrate our site to a different platform?
Usually, yes. I handle the full migration process — content mapping, URL structure, redirects, and SEO preservation (titles, meta, schema) — so you don't lose search equity in the move. I also use it as an opportunity to clean up bloat, consolidate pages, and sharpen internal linking. If you're in the Portland market, I bring local SEO context to that too.
That said, some migrations aren't a good fit: highly customized enterprise platforms, sites with thousands of pages, proprietary backend systems that can't be exported cleanly, or situations where the platform you're moving to can't actually support what your current site does. Reach out and we can explore options together.
How much does a website in Portland cost?
Investment varies based on scope, but most complete website projects range from $5,000-$15,000. I provide transparent pricing after our discovery call when I understand your needs.
Do I need to be in Portland to work with you?
No — I work with clients across the US. That said, if you're a Portland-area business, nonprofit, or creative, there's an added layer of local context I bring to the work that national agencies can't replicate.
What's the difference between a website refresh and a full redesign?
A refresh updates the look, copy, or content within your existing structure. A redesign rebuilds the architecture, strategy, and design from the ground up. Which one you need depends on whether your current site's bones are solid or whether the whole foundation needs to change. I cover this in depth in my notes on redesigns vs refreshes.
Do you work with clients who already have a website?
Yes — most of my clients come to me with something already built. Sometimes it needs a refresh, sometimes a full rebuild, sometimes just maintenance and SEO. We figure out the right scope together on the discovery call.
What does accessibility mean for a website?
Accessibility means your site works for everyone — people using screen readers, people with low vision, people on older devices or slow connections. It also means practical things like listing your hours, your menu, your insurance providers, your pricing. If a visitor has to call or email to get basic information, your site isn't fully accessible. I build accessibility into every project from the start.
Can you help with copy and content, or do I need to provide everything?
Both options are available. I provide a guided content framework for every project — structured prompts that walk you through what each page needs. If you want full copywriting support, that can be added to scope. Most clients land somewhere in the middle.
How do I know if I need SEO?
If you want people to find you through Google — and not just people who already know your name — you need SEO. For Portland businesses, nonprofits, and creatives, local SEO is especially important. I build on-page SEO into every website project and offer standalone SEO strategy for clients who need to go deeper.
What happens after my website launches?
30 days of post-launch support is included in every project. After that, I offer monthly website maintenance plans that cover QA, updates, performance monitoring, and someone who catches problems before you do.
Do you offer payment plans?
Projects are typically split 50% at signing and 50% at completion. For larger projects, alternative payment schedules are available — just ask during the discovery call.
Independent. Intentional. portland-focused
If you’re looking for a web designer in Portland, Oregon — I’d love to help you bring your vision to life. I know what it's like to build from scratch, scale fast, and need tools that don't collapse under pressure. I've been a founder. I've pitched investors. I've lived the scramble. When you work with me, expect:

FOUNDER'S PERSPECTIVE
I've built and sold businesses. I know the challenges Portland business owners, org leaders, and creatives face.
DIRECT ACCESS
You work with me, or the dream team we build together. No middlemen, no junior subcontractors.
FLEXIBILITY
Website design, messaging, campaigns, decks — whatever your next growth stage demands, I've got it covered.
WHAT TO EXPECT — THE PROCESS
Starting with a quick intake form and moving into no-cost and no-obligation call, we'll talk vision, challenges, goals, timeline, and budget. I'll ask questions about your audience, your offers, and what's not working and what is so we can scope a clear project path together.
DISCOVERY FORM & CALL
If aligned after the discovery call, I'll send over a detailed proposal outlining scope, deliverables, timeline, and investment. Everything is transparent — what's included, what's not, and what the process looks like from start to finish. Once you're ready to move forward, you'll accept & sign the contract and will receive an invoice for a 50% deposit. I lock in your start date and get your project officially on the calendar.
PROPOSAL
We kick things off with a deep-dive live virtual meeting where I gather everything I need: brand assets, content, access to platforms, inspiration, and any existing materials. You'll receive access to your dedicated client portal during the onboarding call as well as a chance to ask any questions before we dive into the work.
ONBOARDING
Depending on your project, this phase includes strategy, design, copywriting, buildout, or whatever we've scoped. You'll get regular updates and structured check-ins. I'll present work at key milestones for your feedback. Once designs are approved and systems are built, I move into implementation mode: launching your website, setting up automations, activating campaigns, or whatever final buildout your project requires along with a final QA audit.
PROJECT TIME!
I don't just hand you the keys and disappear. I walk you through everything — how to update your website, use your new systems, manage your tools. You'll get screen recordings, documentation, and a live training session so you feel confident running things on your own. Plus, 30 days of post-launch support is included.
HANDOFF & TRAINING
YOU’RE BUILDING SOMETHING GREAT. YOUR WEBSITE SHOULD KEEP PACE.
Let's talk about where you are now — and how strategic web design can get you ready for your
